This one comes up at almost every market stall - someone picks up a melt or shower gel, asks what's in it, and then asks "but is it natural though?" It's a fair question. So let's actually get into it: what "natural" means in fragrance, what synthetic really is, and where the safety concerns genuinely sit for each. Spoiler: it's not as simple as one being good and one being bad.
๐ฟ What "all-natural" fragrance actually is
Natural fragrance usually means essential oils and absolutes - scent compounds extracted directly from plants, flowers, resins, or peels. No lab synthesis, just distillation or extraction. There's something genuinely lovely about that - a rose absolute really is rose, top to bottom.
The catch is that "natural" isn't a protected or standardised term the way people assume. It doesn't automatically mean gentler, safer, or better regulated. It just means the origin was a plant rather than a lab.
โ Where natural genuinely wins
To give natural its fair due - there are real upsides:
Complex, layered scent profiles that shift subtly as they warm - true botanicals rarely smell "flat," because they're made up of hundreds of naturally occurring compounds rather than a fixed formula. There's also a genuine appeal in traceability - knowing an oil came from a specific plant, harvest, and process, rather than a lab blend. For some skin types, single-note essential oils can also be easier to identify a reaction to, simply because there's only one ingredient to isolate rather than a multi-part blend.
โ ๏ธ Where natural gets tricky
Here's what doesn't get said enough: essential oils are actually more likely to trigger skin sensitivity and allergic reactions than most fragrance oils, simply because they're unrefined and contain naturally occurring allergens at higher, more variable concentrations. Citrus oils can be phototoxic. Batch-to-batch consistency is harder to control because it depends on the plant's growing conditions that year. And the scent throw in wax melts tends to be weaker and fades faster, because natural oils are more volatile.
There's also a cat-shaped elephant in the room for me personally: a lot of essential oils - tea tree, citrus, lavender, ylang ylang among them - are genuinely toxic to cats, even through skin contact or inhalation. With five of them in my home, that's not a small consideration.
๐งช Why I work with fragrance oils
Fragrance oils are precisely formulated blends - some contain natural isolates, some are fully synthetic, most are a mix. The reason I lean on them is control: every batch smells identical to the last, they're formulated to be stable under heat (crucial for wax melts and burners), and they open up scent profiles that don't exist in nature at all - nobody's extracting "birthday cake" from a plant.
Every fragrance oil I use is IFRA compliant, meaning it's been assessed against international safety standards for usage levels, skin contact, and inhalation. To be fair, this isn't unique to synthetics - reputable essential oil suppliers provide the same IFRA certificates and safety data sheets for their oils too. The real dividing line on safety documentation isn't natural vs synthetic, it's whether you're buying from a supplier who tests and documents properly, full stop.
๐ฌ Synthetic isn't flawless either
In fairness, fragrance oils aren't a free pass. IFRA compliant means the risk has been assessed and kept within safe usage limits - it doesn't mean zero risk of any reaction, and some people are genuinely sensitive to specific synthetic musks or fixatives, just as others are sensitive to specific plant compounds.
There's also a transparency trade-off worth being honest about: fragrance oil blends are proprietary formulas, so a maker often can't tell you the exact aromachemical breakdown the way they could point to a single essential oil and say "that's lavender, full stop." You're trusting the supplier's safety data sheet and IFRA certificate rather than being able to identify every component yourself. That's a fair thing for a customer to want to know, even if the safety testing behind it is solid.
๐งด What about cosmetics: preservatives vs antioxidants?
This is where the "natural is safer" idea really falls apart, because it's not just about scent - it's about whether your product goes off in the tub three weeks after you bought it. And this bit's worth untangling properly, because preservatives and antioxidants aren't the same thing and aren't solving the same problem.
Anything containing water (body butters with a water phase, some soaps, room sprays) needs a proper preservative system, or it becomes a breeding ground for mould, yeast, and bacteria. That's not a maybe, it's chemistry. "Natural" preservatives exist - things like radish root ferment or leaf extracts - but they're generally weaker, work against a narrower range of microbes, and often need to be used at higher concentrations to have any effect at all, which brings its own irritation risk. Proper cosmetic preservatives are tested specifically for that job, at usage rates that are assessed as safe, and chosen because they work reliably at very low, well-tested percentages.
Anhydrous products - no water at all, just oils, butters, and waxes - don't need a microbial preservative the same way, because bacteria and mould need water to grow. What they need instead is an antioxidant, to stop the oils themselves from oxidising and turning rancid over time. Natural carrier oils and butters - shea, cocoa, sweet almond - will do this eventually regardless of how "natural" or "synthetic" the product is marketed as; it's just what oils do as they age. A small amount of an antioxidant slows that considerably and extends shelf life, without needing a full preservative system at all.
So the honest version is: what a product needs depends on its water content, not on how natural it's trying to look. A water-based product with no preservative is a genuine risk. An anhydrous product with no antioxidant just won't last as long. Neither is really solved by avoiding "chemicals" - they're solved by formulating for what the product actually is.
๐ Safety really comes down to this
Whether a scent is natural or synthetic, the questions worth actually asking are the same: is it IFRA assessed, is the usage rate within safe limits for the product type, and has it been patch tested if you're prone to sensitivity? "Natural" and "safe" aren't synonyms, and neither are "synthetic" and "harsh." The formulation, the dose, and the supplier behind it are what matter.
๐ So which do I use?
Mostly fragrance oils, for consistency and the scent range they open up. But I'm not precious about it - if a natural note does something special a blend can't, it earns its place. The goal was never "natural good, synthetic bad" or the other way round. It's just: does it smell incredible, is it properly documented, and can I tell you honestly what's in it and why.
